Sheet NEW · Onboarding

First rides done right in the Delta

You do not need a carbon bike, a power meter, or a Strava trophy to start riding in Egypt. You need a helmet, a machine that stops, and six weeks of patient loops before you chase desert horizons. This sheet is the path we recommend from Second Tanta outward.

Six-week plan

From driveway to Delta Friday 45

Volume beats intensity in Gharbia heat. These weeks assume three sessions per week; if life allows two, stretch the timeline — do not compress the distances.

Week 0 · before you roll

Fit, brakes, helmet

Visit a local shop or the desk with your bike. Saddle height should leave a slight knee bend at bottom dead centre. Brakes must stop you in dry and dusty conditions — worn pads are not “character.” Buy a helmet that fits snug; we will not argue about this on group rides.

Ride 5 km around your neighbourhood at conversational effort. Practice one-handed signalling, looking over your shoulder without swerving, and stopping smoothly at a mock junction.

Weeks 1–2

15–25 km loops · dawn only

Three rides weekly, 15–25 km, same time slot — ideally 05:30–07:00 in summer. Pick flat corridors you can repeat: El-Galaa side streets, quiet farm connectors, canal shoulders with visible sight lines. Goal: comfort on the saddle, drinking while moving, and reading surface changes without panic.

Weeks 3–4

30–40 km · add one longer ride

Two short sessions plus one 35–40 km loop on the weekend. Introduce a spare tube, mini pump, and the habit of checking tyres before you leave. Practice eating something solid mid-ride — dates, a small sandwich — because gel-only nutrition fails on Egyptian flats around km 32.

Week 5

Traffic literacy ride

One short urban session with an experienced friend or our traffic calm clinic: lane position, eye contact, passing parked cars with door clearance. Not bravery — predictability. Read the safety sheet traffic chapter the night before.

Week 6

First group ride · Delta Friday 45

RSVP to Delta Friday 45. Tell us it is your first group ride. Arrive ten minutes early, bottles full, phone charged. Stay in the middle of the pack, ask questions at regroups, and ignore anyone who treats the ride like a race.

Kit list

What to buy once, what to borrow, what to skip

Essentials (week zero)

  • Helmet — new or gently used with no impact history
  • Two water bottles and cages that do not launch bottles over chip-seal
  • Front and rear lights — dawn starts still cross dim village streets
  • Spare tube sized to your tyres, tyre levers, mini pump
  • Multi-tool with Allen keys that match your bolts

Worth it within a month

  • Padded shorts — chamois cream optional, dignity not optional
  • Sun sleeves or lightweight long jersey for UV on exposed Delta roads
  • Clear or photochromic glasses — grit in the eye ends rides fast
  • Small saddle bag or frame bag for tube and tools

Skip for now

  • Power meters, smart trainers marketed as “the only way to improve”
  • Race wheels on pothole-rich connectors
  • Carbon shoes before you know your cleats survive canal dust

Mindset

How to think about progress on flat Egyptian roads

Imported cycling culture sells mountains, suffering, and heroic elevation gain. Gharbia offers something quieter and equally valuable: repeatability, heat discipline, and the social skill of riding in a line past irrigation workers who have seen everything on two wheels.

Progress here looks like finishing a 40 km loop without walking, remembering to drink before you are thirsty, and holding a steady line when a truck passes. It does not require collapsing at the end or posting suffering face photos.

Bad days happen — wind, poor sleep, Ramadan fasting adjustments, family obligations. Missing a week does not reset your fitness to zero. Return with shorter loops instead of punishing “catch-up” rides at noon.

Compare yourself to last month’s you, not to a rider on a 40,000 LE bike who trains before dawn daily. Community beats comparison. The community sheet describes the people who will wait when your chain drops — be that person for someone else by week eight.

First group ride

What happens on Delta Friday 45

Morning group ride on open Delta road
Regroups exist for a reason

05:15 roll-out means wheels moving at 05:15, not shoes being tied at 05:14. Briefing covers route, regroup points, hand signals, and who leads. Pace is conversational — you should speak in full sentences at regroups without gasping.

Your job in the pack

  • Stay one bike length behind the wheel in front — no half-wheeling
  • Signal potholes and debris with a pointed finger and a verbal “hole”
  • Do not overlap wheels. Ever.
  • At regroups, wait for the last rider before rolling — no silent drops
  • If you need to peel off early, tell the ride leader at the previous stop

Mechanical? Raise your hand. Cramp? Same. The group will wait at safe shoulders. Pride costs more than time.

After the ride, optional coffee near the desk. Ask what you did well and one thing to fix next week — we answer honestly.

Filter the noise

Advice to ignore when you ride in Egypt

“You need 100 km every weekend”

Heat and traffic make volume a season problem, not a badge. Build 40 km comfort before chasing century dreams. Long Lattice exists when you are ready — not when Instagram says so.

“No pain, no gain”

Distinguish training load from injury signals and heat illness. Dizziness, stop sweating, confusion — stop and shade. Pain in joints is not character building.

“Road bikes only”

Hybrids and gravel bikes survive Delta chip-seal and farm connectors better than fragile race setups. Tyres with clearance beat aerodynamics on El-Mahalla edges.

“Ride at noon to toughen up”

Noon toughens hospital staff, not beginners. Dawn sessions build fitness; midday rides build regret. Read training sheet heat chapters.

Social media rewards extremes. Local riding rewards showing up again next Friday. Choose the second path for your first year.

Questions welcome
