Sheet 03 · Delta lattice
The green geometry around Tanta
Canal shoulders, village cores, and farm connectors across Gharbia — where flat roads teach pace, irrigation edits the map weekly, and dawn is the only honest start time in summer.
Terrain
Surfaces you will actually ride
The Nile Delta looks flat on every map. It is flat. That does not make it easy — it makes wind, exposure, and surface texture the variables that decide your day. Gharbia riders learn to read asphalt by sound: the hollow tick of good canal shoulder, the gravel chatter of a farm connector after harvest, the sudden soft give of irrigation mud where yesterday’s hardpack lived.
| Surface | Where | Tyre note |
|---|---|---|
| Canal shoulder asphalt | Bahr Shebin, Ibrahimiya branches | 28–32 mm road tyres fine |
| Village core paving | Tanta outskirts, Samanoud | Watch for speed bumps, loose sand at edges |
| Farm connectors | Between irrigation channels | 32 mm+ or gravel bike; sealant recommended |
| Post-irrigation mud | Low fields after water release | Avoid or walk — do not hero through |
| Industrial edge roads | El-Mahalla approaches | Truck awareness; harder asphalt, more debris |
Timing
When the Delta rewards you — and when it punishes
Delta riding is a scheduling discipline disguised as a geography lesson. The same 42 km loop at 05:15 feels like meditation. At 11:00 in July it feels like a physics exam you are failing.
- 05:00–06:30: Prime window year-round. Bakeries open, trucks sparse, shoulders mostly yours.
- 06:30–08:00: Acceptable in cooler months. Market traffic increases near Tanta core.
- 08:00–10:00: Short loops only in spring/autumn. Summer: you should already be home.
- After 10:00 (May–Sep): Desk recommendation: do not start. Heat injury is not a badge.
- Friday: Social group starts. Slightly more traffic near mosques after mid-morning — plan accordingly.
Flat roads lie. They tell you elevation is free while they charge you in wind, sun, and the mud irrigation hid until your front wheel found it. — Delta field note · Gharbia
Sample loops
Three verified loops: A, B, and C
All distances from El-Galaa desk landmark. Last full verification: spring season. Write the desk before summer commits.
Loop A — Canal shoulder 42 (DLT-07)
42 km · flat · 2h–2h30 · shade: low · bail-outs: 3
Roll out El-Galaa toward Bahr Shebin corridor. Hold the canal shoulder where asphalt allows — it narrows near two farm gates; slow and signal. Turn north at the marked bridge (bakery on corner — good water refill). Return via quiet farm asphalt parallel to main road. Avoid the eastern connector after heavy irrigation; sheet marks alternate.
Best for: first long Delta ride, Friday group pace, fitness base building. Tyres: 28 mm road with sealant.
Loop B — Village square 28 (NEW-02)
28 km · flat · 1h15–1h45 · shade: medium · bail-outs: 4
Short social loop through Tanta Qism 2 outskirts and Samanoud approach. Three village squares with cafés. Traffic light near central crossing — walk if unsure. Designed for beginners and return-to-riding adults. No farm connectors on default route.
Best for: first month of riding, parents with teens, testing bike setup. Helmet required at group starts.
Loop C — Kafr El-Zayat bend 61 (DLT-09)
61 km · flat · 3h–3h30 · shade: low · bail-outs: 2
Longer flat run toward Kafr El-Zayat river bend. One farm connector at km 38 — rough hardpack, 800 m, walk if wet. River-edge asphalt is smooth but exposed to crosswind. Return on parallel road with more truck traffic after 08:30 — start early.
Best for: experienced flat-road riders, monthly long lattice training. Tyres: 32 mm recommended. Carry 2L minimum.
Etiquette
Village etiquette on Delta connectors
Cycling through Gharbia villages is not trespassing theatre — it is neighbourly passage. Farmers, kids, and shopkeepers remember how riders behave. One aggressive peloton ruins a connector for everyone for a season.
- Slow through cores: Walk if traffic is dense or animals are on the road. No sprinting past mosques or schools.
- Greet, don’t perform: A nod or short salaam beats shouting English or ringing bells unnecessarily.
- Dogs: Most village dogs bark and stop. Do not chase back. Slow, steady line. Report aggressive packs to the desk with pin location.
- Photography: Ask before photographing people, especially children. Roads are public; faces are not yours to collect.
- Litter: Carry wrappers home. Delta ditches already fight enough plastic without cyclists adding energy gel sleeves.
- Groups: Single file through narrow village strips. Call passes clearly. Headphones out.
Hazards
Irrigation, harvest, and the map that shifts weekly
Irrigation release
When fields flood, connectors turn to clay. Tracks that were fast on Tuesday become unrideable by Thursday. Watch for wet edges, darker soil, and tractor ruts leading to soft centres. Bail out to canal asphalt — always know your nearest bail-out before you need it.
Harvest season trucks
Sugarcane and grain harvest increases truck traffic on industrial edges and farm access roads. Shoulders shrink. Debris — stalks, loose gravel — appears without warning. El-Mahalla approaches need extra gap and early signals.
Shoulder disappearance
Some canal sections simply end. No sign. Asphalt narrows to tyre width with a ditch beside you. Slow, take the lane briefly if safe, or dismount. Never assume continuity because yesterday’s ride had shoulder.
Heat on exposed flats
Flat + sun + no tree cover = heat load that feels disproportionate to distance. Loop C at noon in May is a medical risk, not a training plan. Finish by 10:00 in warm months or shorten.
Before roll-out
Check desk updates and irrigation chatter
Email or call if your loop is older than 60 days since last verification. Journal entries often flag connector changes first.
Km 0–15
Confirm surface matches sheet
If the first farm connector is already wet, abort the shortcut. The Delta rewards conservative choices.
