Sheet 04 · Desert fringe
Where the green line ends
Hardpack beyond Gharbia’s irrigation geometry — weekend desert edges toward Fayoum connectors and western fringe roads. Heat as coach. Water as law. Turn-around rules that are not negotiable.
Rules
Desert fringe rules before you roll out
Desert riding from the Delta is not “Delta loops but sandier.” It is a different contract with distance, heat, and rescue geometry. The green line — where irrigation and shade end — is visible if you know what to look for: palm density drops, asphalt gives way to hardpack, and the wind stops apologising.
Kassa publishes desert sheets only for corridors we have ridden with the water load we recommend. We do not publish fantasy GPX across open desert without bail-outs. First-timers should join a listed group start or ride with a support vehicle until they know their heat response.
- Turn-around time is set at roll-out — not when you feel tired at km 40.
- No solo first attempts on sheets marked DST-04 or higher without desk consultation.
- Support contact shared with someone not on the ride before you leave Tanta.
- Headphones out — you need to hear wind, surface, and your own breathing.
- Helmet required at all Kassa desert starts. No exceptions.
Heat literacy
Heat as the variable that overrides fitness
Egyptian desert fringe riding punishes the fit and the unfit alike when water math fails. Your training from cool Delta mornings does not transfer linearly. A rider who crushes 70 km on canal asphalt may struggle at 45 km on exposed hardpack in March — not from weakness, from radiant load and dry air.
| Condition | Action |
|---|---|
| Start after 07:00 (Oct–Apr) | Shorten distance 30% or cancel |
| Start anytime May–Sep | Desk recommendation: do not. Delta dawn only. |
| Wind > 25 km/h sustained | Postpone or choose sheltered Delta loop |
| Less than 3L carried (55 km sheet) | Do not roll out |
| No known bail-out within 15 km | Do not roll out |
The desert does not care about your training plan. It cares whether you brought enough water and the humility to turn around on time. — Desert fringe briefing · Kassa

Weekend shape
How a desert fringe weekend actually runs
Friday evening
Confirm sheet, weather, and RSVP
Check desk email or events page for wind forecast notes. Pack bike, charge lights, lay out kit. Text support contact your intended sheet code and turn-around time.
Saturday 04:45
Meet at El-Galaa or listed start pin
Tyre pressure check, water count aloud in group, route briefing repeats bail-outs. Late arrivals miss briefing — they do not join mid-desert.
05:15–05:30
Roll out toward green line
Delta asphalt warm-up. Last bakery stop. Cross into hardpack together. Pace is social until first bail-out checkpoint.
Turn-around hour
Non-negotiable return
Set at briefing — typically 09:00–09:30 for 55 km sheets. Riders who want more distance schedule a different weekend, not a negotiation in the wind.
Return Tanta
Post-dust ritual
Chain wash, hydration, food. Log surface changes for the desk. Gear sheet covers drivetrain care after grit.
Calendar
When we announce desert dates
Kassa does not run desert fringe groups every weekend. We announce when heat, wind, and surface verification align — typically 10–14 days ahead for seasonal windows.
| Window | Announcement rhythm |
|---|---|
| Oct – Nov | Two group starts per month · posted on events + email list |
| Dec – Feb | Peak desert season · up to three starts per month |
| Mar – Apr | Selective starts only · heat checks daily |
| May – Sep | No scheduled desert fringe groups · desk case-by-case only |
RSVP via contact page or email with sheet code, experience level, and water capacity. We cap group size for safety and bail-out clarity.
